The 9th annual Almancil International Rotary (AIRC) Golf Tournament was held at the Ferragudo Golf Course in Ferragudo on July 4th, where 68 players participated in perfect conditions. The course hosted us as its inaugural golfing tournament and was in excellent condition thanks to the attention of the ground staff (this is also the newest golf course in the Algarve´, owned by the Pestana Group). Golf professionals Francisco Oliveira and Ricardo Costa were on hand to demonstrate to us mere mortals how to drive a ball and play par 3 holes.
The tournament was preceded by a wonderful breakfast; followed, after play, with a magnificent lunch prepared by the catering staff at the course. A very convivial experience meant everyone, including our band of volunteers & numerous guests left with a smile on their face!
Our overall winners were Emma & Nick Hollen, David Meers and Hannah Sharpe. Played as a Texas Scramble format the winners scored 47 points. Runners up were Anders Wallstrom, Maria Wille, Jacques Prete & Klaus Ukens, just 1 point behind. Longest drive was won by Jamie O’Docherty & nearest the pin winner was Anna-Paula Marques.
After the prize giving there was a raffle and an auction of various merchandise. A record event donation was raised (over €13,000) which will be used to support local charities in the Almancil, Quarteira and Vilamoura area.
